5 Tie Dye Style Rules

I love wearing color and tie dye, but I don’t always want to look like I’m headed to a jam band concert… although I might be, so I love looks and pieces that can function in different types of settings.

First, no one should be sweating about following certain style rules. Self expression and going with your own intuition with what looks and feels good is the most important style success secret.

It’s also key to start with what you already have, and what makes you feel comfortable. If you’re needing to invest in some basic wardrobe items and accessories, check out my post about my favorite base closet pieces here.

But, if you’re looking for a sure and fast way to style your favorite tie dye pieces, here are my 5 go-to tie dye style tips…

Pair with neutrals

While I love a maximalist tie dye look, sometimes the best way to compliment tie dye is to pair it with neutral colors, such as accessorizing with a denim vest, or starting with a base of a black linen bodysuit.

I share a deeper dive into my favorite tie dye style pairings in this post here.

Layersss

Whether looking to highlight or lowlight your tie dye, layering pieces and accessories when you can is key.

My favorite go-to layers are my denim vest, a breathe-able cardigan, cozy sweater, lightweight scarf, and in cold temps one of my faux furs.

Color-pop pairing

One of my favorite ways to wear a tie dye piece is to pair it with color pops found in the dye design.

Choosing different colors to pop with each wear is also an easy way to give a garment more versatility.

Less is more, but more is also more

This depends on where you’re going and what kind of look you’re going for, and whether you want the tie dye to stand out or blend in.

Sometimes I love when just the peak of a cotton bralette or bodysuit is visible under otherwise a neutral looking outfit. But sometimes, I enjoy rocking a full on maximalist tie dye look.

The power of accessories

It’s so simple, but accessories can take a tie dye from 0 to 60 so fast.

Belts, hats, shoes, socks/stockings, jewelry that compliment the colors and style have so much power to elevate a look.

Don’t forget to accessorize!
